Church: as an Inspiration (Part 3)
[Preached by Pastor Kenneth Chin at Acts Church Camp on 2 September 2018]
In the finale of this 3 part message, we will discuss the role of Church as an Inspiration. Having shared about church as an institution and church as an instruction, ultimately, the church should be able to inspire others.
Just as Paul and Barnabas strengthened the souls of the disciples in the book of Acts, we as a church need to be here to strengthen each other.
Read | Acts 14:21-22
Church should not just be an institution – we must be inspired to be in church, to read God’s Word not because we have to but because we want to.
Not out of legalism but out of love.
It is about Christ being with the church. Jesus said that He is with us always, even to the end of the age. No matter what we are going through, God is with us.
He is not just pointing fingers and telling us what to do. In fact, He is the Way, He is the Shepherd, so He always leads us from the front.
When a child holds his father’s hand,
it does not matter how hard the pull is –
nothing seems too difficult
as long as the child knows he is safe.
If you think church is full of rules,
know that it is not about that
– because rules are nothing without relationship.
We may be strong on institution or instruction,
but are the non-believers around us inspired to be Christians?
Read | Acts 3
“When people saw the man who had been healed standing with Peter and John, they could say nothing against it.” Acts 4: 14
Similarly, the church should be such an inspiration that the world can see miracles when they stand beside us – because we live for people; to see them set free, healed, delivered and saved.
Let our prayer be for more lives to stand beside us and be transformed.
People only realised that Peter and John had been with Jesus when they saw their boldness. They could not have been so bold unless they had been with Jesus!
Read | Matthew 28:20
Jesus tells us to teach others to observe all that He has commanded us – that takes boldness, but that is why Jesus promised that He is with us.
But are we with Him? Do we believe and do we act upon our beliefs?
In our journey we must ensure that we are with God, as long as we believe, we bring ourselves to be with God.
In Matthew 19:26, Jesus told the disciples, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”, while in Mark 9:23, He said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
Often, we think God is always with us and we do not need to draw near to Him. But the Bible reminds us that we need to draw near to God and He will draw near to us.
We first need to be with Jesus by obeying His commands before signs and wonders follow. He wants to be with us, He wants to manifest Himself to us and show us His signs and wonders.
When we talk about church as an institution,
it’s about connections.
When we talk about church as an instruction,
it’s about consistency.
And when we talk about church as an inspiration,
it’s about confidence.
It is true that God loves us first, but often we still do not get to see our breakthrough because the secret is not just God loving us but us loving God; not just God being with us but us being with Him.
We may sometimes feel like God is not real to us, but that is only because although He is with us, we are not with Him.
To have confidence that God is with us, we need to have consistency in life through our daily disciplines that please God. When we do so, we know that He is with us because we are with Him.
The picture that God has for His church may start with institution and instruction, but ultimately He wants to bring us to a place of inspiration.
Read | 2 Timothy 3:16-17
The heart of God is to give us His word, to inspire us for good works, so that we can see people who are fully healed standing beside us.
Are you hurting and fed up?
God is here to remind you that He loves you,
He is here to inspire and strengthen you.
All He is asking you is, will you be with Him?
